LGBT+ History Month is marked every February, founded in 2004 by Schools OUT UK. This year the theme is Medicine – #UnderTheScope, celebrating LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.
Whilst we recognise the incredible contribution LGBT+ people have made to the field of Medicine and Healthcare it’s important we also recognise the health inequalities suffered by LGBT+ peoples. Carers UK found that 60% of carers report a long-term health condition or disability compared to 50% of non-carers and 70% of lesbian, gay, or bisexual carers report a long-term condition compared to 60% of straight carers. As an inclusive organisation we support unpaid carers from all backgrounds.
In February 2022, we became the first carer organisation in the UK to earn the Pride in Care (PiC) quality standard! This quality standard is managed and awarded by Opening Doors, in recognition of our commitment to continuously improve the quality of our care and support for LGBTQ+ people over 50 years old.
On top of that, all CSWS staff, from Trustees, Managers to Wellbeing Support Workers, have the opportunity to attend LGBTQ Awareness Training sessions delivered by Allsorts Youth.
We also aim to support our staff, we know that more than 50% of our staff are registered as unpaid carers and we understand that they come from a range of backgrounds it’s important to recognise their unique experiences which help us improve our service and ensure that all unpaid carers receive the help they need.
