Befriending Week 2023

2023 marks 11 years of Befriending Week and the theme this year is “Befriending is Support”.

What is Befriending Week?

Befriending Week is an annual event that takes place in communities around the world. It typically occurs in the second week of November, and its purpose is to celebrate and promote the importance of befriending, fostering relationships, and combating social isolation. This initiative aims to encourage individuals and organizations to reach out to those who might be feeling lonely or isolated and create spaces for meaningful connections to flourish.

The Importance of Befriending

  1. Social Isolation: Loneliness and social isolation can have severe consequences on a person’s mental and physical health. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and even increase the risk of chronic illnesses. Befriending can act as a buffer against these issues, helping individuals feel more connected and supported.
  2. Building Resilience: Friendship offers a support network during challenging times. By having friends, individuals can build resilience and face life’s ups and downs with greater strength.
  3. Expanding Horizons: Friends introduce us to new perspectives, hobbies, and experiences. Befriending opens up opportunities for personal growth and learning from others.

Did you know we offer a check in and chat service?

For carers who feel like they could just do with a good old natter, our check in and chat service sets carers up with one of our friendly volunteers, over a 6-month period. The calls can help the carer to:

  • feel less isolated and alone in their caring role
  • increase social connections
  • feel more able to access services available in the community

You can reach out by emailing info@carerssupport.org.uk or calling 0300 028 8888 If you would like to volunteer for us, find out about the available roles here.
